I often met children with dyslexia in church during my high school years, and I understood their difficulty in learning languages. When I have the opportunity, I will use the current interactive technology to create a better educational experience for them.

Background

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a common learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding).

When children reach a certain age some of them will face different levels of dyslexia. Sound and image are relatively easy for them to recognize. However, when they are associated with abstract words, they may encounter difficulties that they cannot overcome.

If the child seems to have difficulties understanding and processing verbal information, special educational needs (SEN) advice should be sought by his/her parents.

Current Situation

To use Elkonin boxes, a child listens to a word and moves a token into a box for each sound or phoneme. In some cases, different colored tokens may be used for consonants and vowels or just for each phoneme in the word.

Potential Problems

  • The teacher's manual record is liable to error

  • The students' problems are complex to expose when they say the word together

  • Lack of parental involvement

In addition to cards and marbles, the traditional Elkonin Box Game also required pronunciation from teachers and students.

In order to make students have a more efficient learning system, I designed an Individual Digital Version of the Elkonin Box Exercise.

  • Individual Learning with no interference

  • Immediate correction feedback

  • Fun & entertaining learning by playing
